A busy main road through a North East town has been blocked following a serious crash involving a pedestrian, which prompted a huge emergency service response this morning.
Ambulance crews and police converged on Ponteland, in Northumberland, after reports of a collision involving a car and pedestrian on the A696 at about 11.35am on Saturday (June 15).
The road remains closed as police continue to deal with the incident. There is no further information available about casualties.
According to reports the A696 has been closed between North Road and Ridgely Drive.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 11.35am today (Saturday), police received a report of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on the A696 in Ponteland, near to the junction with North Road.
“Emergency services are currently in attendance at the scene where some road closures are in place.
“Motorists are asked to find an alternative route where possible.”
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called to a road traffic collision today (15 June) at 11:35am on North Road in Ponteland.

“We dispatched one ambulance crew, one clinical team leader, one duty officer, one specialist paramedic, a doctor and one HART crew (Hazardous Area Response Team) to the incident.”
